What's In My Camera Bag

I get asked all the time what kind of camera I have, so I thought that I would do a blog post about what is in my camera bag. And then also answer some other frequently asked questions.

The Camera:
I shoot with a Canon 6D. I just recently upgraded from a Canon Rebel T2i this year and I bought a Canon 6D. You can read my review on the Canon 6D here

To say I love this camera would be an understatement. I have been able to shoot in really low light with no problem with this camera. It has been worth every penny to upgrade.

Like I said, before I upgraded, I shot with a Canon Rebel T2i. It was a wonderful starter camera and I learned a lot with that camera. I wanted to upgrade to a full frame camera and I didn't have enough money for the Canon Mark III, so I bought the 6D. With the 6D, I am able to focus fast and shoot at high ISO.

The Lenses:

I have two prime lenses; the 50mm 1.4 and the 35mm 1.4. Prime lenses are lenses that do not zoom. I don't own any zoom lenses because I prefer the sharpness of prime lenses. I can easily zoom in and out with me feet. :-)

50mm 1.4

This lens stays on my camera 95% of the time. It is a wonderful focal length and it is super sharp.

Here are some examples of images I have taken with the 50 1.4.

35mm 1.4.
It is a wider angled lens than the 50mm.

This lens was my first big purchase after I started my photography business. It has a big price tag, but this lens was a game changer for me as far as how sharp my images were. I first rented it from Borrow Lenses as a birthday present to myself. I just wanted to try something different than my 50mm 1.8 I had. Once I saw how sharp the images were with this lens, I couldn't go back to my 50mm 1.8 lens. So, I returned the lens to Borrow Lenses and bought my own copy a few days later.

Here are some examples of images with my 35mm.

My Camera Bag:

I have a Kelly Moore B-Hobo Camera Bag.

I like it because it looks like a purse and I can carry it around with me any where and it doesn't look like a camera bag. You can check it out here or check out Kelly's other bags. I can fit my camera body with the 50mm lens attached, my 35mm and my external flash. If I don't need my external flash, I can fit my phone, wallet, chapstick, whatever really in the other compartment. It has two zipper pockets on the front and one zipper pocket on the back to carry extra memory cards, extra camera batteries, ect....

FAQ:

What kind of camera do you recommend I get?

I recommend starting with an entry level DSLR and learning everything you can about the camera. Something like a Canon Rebel T5i would be great entry level camera.  I also recommend that you skip the kit lens that comes with the camera and purchase only the body of the camera. I recommend that you purchase a 50mm 1.8 lens to go with your camera. Its only $125 and it will allow you to shoot some pretty great images. If you have the extra money, I would recommend getting the 50mm 1.4 instead of the 1.8. It is a very sharp lens and still at a great price.

Your camera takes great pictures! How does it do that?

My camera takes great pictures because I tell it to. Learning to shoot in manual mode is one of the best things you can do for your photography. There are a lot of photography tutorials online that can help you learn to shoot in manual. One of the best ones that I have seen is Mom*Tog's UNmanual 2.  She explains everything in plain english. You'll learn about ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Exposure, how to use light, ect... It is a great investment and well worth the money. And practice, practice, practice! The more you shoot with your camera the more you are forced to learn about it. Making mistakes are okay as long as you are learning from the mistakes.

How do you edit your photos?

I edit my photos in Photoshop Elements 11. I don't have the money to spend on the latest Professional Photoshop that is out there. Photoshop Elements has been everything I need for editing. There is a learning curve when using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop, so take some time to just learn everything you can about either editing program.

So, I hope that answers some questions that you all have and I hope that it helps when you are on the hunt for a new camera this holiday season. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you all have.

Thanks for reading!
